Why Because He Lives?

um, this is the only old looking piece of sheet music I could find.

I’m a hymn guy. There’s a lot of good stuff out there. The hymn Because he lives partly captures the Gospel and partly captures human life. I love the blend.

It’s always the final verse of hymns that crack me (my voice has on occasion been known to quiver, but don’t tell Liezl). It’s the thought of the blessed hope of the future that we have once saved. I’m thinking of 1 Thessalonians 4 verses 16 – 18:

16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of {the} archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore comfort one another with these words.”

This song sings of what I hold dear: That Christ lived, died and was resurrected. It’s in that that I have the hope for tomorrow that the hymn expounds. Paul’s words to the church at Corinth in 1 Corinthians 15 verse 3 – 4 ring clear:

3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,”

Because He Lives

God sent His son, they called Him Jesus
He came to love, heal, and forgive.
He lived and died to buy my pardon,
An empty grave is there to prove my Savior lives.

Because He lives, I can face tomorrow.
Because He lives, All fear is gone.
Because I know He holds the future,
And life is worth the living just because He lives.

How sweet to hold a newborn baby,
And feel the pride and joy he gives.
But greater still the calm assurance,
This child can face uncertain days because He lives.

Because He lives, I can face tomorrow.
Because He lives, All fear is gone.
Because I know He holds the future,
And life is worth the living just because He lives.

And then one day I’ll cross the river,
I’ll fight life’s final war with pain.
And then as death gives way to victory,
I’ll see the lights of glory and I’ll know He lives.

Because He lives, I can face tomorrow.
Because He lives, All fear is gone!
Because I know He holds the future
And life is worth the living just because He lives!

  1. He is the one who is always trustworthy, He leads you by your hands and can you imagine you are like a child being led by His hands along the “life path”, it is a very reassuring picture!
